5 out of 5 stars A great all round laptop   December 22, 2009

I got this laptop to replace a desktop and so far it has been excellent.

Spec wise, and price wise, this is superb. The build quality, look and feel is second to none. There really is a justification for spending more on certain brands.

I have only a few minor criticisms of the laptop: 1) it doesn't have a eSATA port, 2) the HDD is not 7200rpm and 3) it comes with a LOT of Sony Bloatware which is annoying. All of these can be easily dealt with by 1) a PC card esata adaptor, 2) it's easy enough to upgrade the HDD and 3) manually uninstall!

Highly recommended.

Got the laptop very quickly, good packaging
Connected the laptop all up and turned it on worked great
Screen is amazing, resoltion is unbelievable, and the colours are just amazing, never seen anything better
Very speedy, and windows 7 is brilliant, blu-ray brill
The one down side is the amount of bloatware, but it can be easily uninstalled
But overall brilliant

This is my 5th laptop and it is the best by far. I have a Mac Book which is great and it came with good software installed but this Sony also came with all the software I need, 6gig of Memory, and with a screen to die for. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars I was a hesitant about sony vaio initially.....   January 9, 2010

I have always stuck with solid computer brands like Dell and Toshiba in the past as they have generally lasted much longer than the abuse that I gave them ever warranted. This laptop seemed to be one of the best specs on the market for the price (which made me second guess it) but I decided to give Sony a try anyway.

I must say that the screen is lovely - vivid and bright. I found one dead pixel way down in the bottom left hand corner behing the windows symbol and considered returning it although I only ever see it on startup so I took the lazy option. Screen is a good size and although its not 17 or 18.4 inches is a great size to allow at least some portability. I tried an 18.4" Toshiba and it could only be used as a desktop replacement in my view.

The setup was suprisingly easy. I have stuck with XP now for quite a while as I know how it works and didn't want the hassle of Vista. Windows 7 is awsome and everything worked perfectly. I am really impressed. It seems far better and more efficient than Vista. The device found my server and other computers on the network with no bother, setup the printer in 2 seconds and worked fine with some other random programs like VNC viewer. The new features are great. There seems to be quite a bit of bloatware from Sony although there are also some really cool and useful programs and features also.

Built in camera is clear and has a great picture on Skype, even in a dark room with just the light from the screen. Microphone is clear and family in Australia said they could hear and see me fine.

The sound was one thing that seems to be getting some negative reviews online. Although its a far cry from the Harmon Kardin sound from Toshiba Qosmio, the pseudo-surround sound works suprisingly well and is a million times better than some of the earlier Sony models I tested over the last 6 months. I dont watch a lot of movies on the laptop so I dont need amazing sound but It seems to be clear and has a reasonable range. The surround sound (through 2 speakers I think) does actually sound like its coming from behind you so kudos Sony, you seemed to have got your act together a bit on this one.

The keyboard is a great layout and easy to touch type, probably one of the nicest keyboards I have used. Unfortunately the key spacing etc comes at the price of a number pad which in my view, should really be on a laptop of this size.

The disk drive worked Ok with all non-blu ray disks although when I put the only bluray disk I had in the drive it wouldn't read it. I sat on the tech support chat with Sony for about 30 mins and they could only suggest I try another bluray and then call back. It might jst be my disk although it worked fine on a PS3. Hence the 4 instead of 5 star rating.

Im sure there are bigger harddrives out there but I store everything externally so this is ample. It does come with an 11GB partitiion with backup on it so you only get 489GB minus the operaating system and bloatware which comes down to 454GB available space.

Anyway, for the price and spec I am really happy with this laptop. Looks good performs well and seems easy to use. Jump in there.
