5 out of 5 stars Windows 7, a gamers perspective.   March 30, 2010

Wow, what a difference a few years makes. I reviewed Windows Vista upon it's release and was quite scathing in my review. In the end they never did quite get Vista up to scratch. I basically built my system dual boot XP+Vista and every month I would boot into Vista and update any required drivers, patch it all up and then try some gaming, and each time it was nowhere near as fast as XP running on the same box.

So, I've been running Windows seven for a couple of months now and prior to that I'd been running the release candidate version. I've deliberately held off reviewing Windows 7 because frankly I've been waiting to see if any problems appear with it. The good news is that so far I've had very few problems. Infact for the last 2 months I've been running my system with just Windows 7 and haven't even bothered having XP installed at all. This is a big deal, kind of like taking off the training wheels.

The install experince for Windows 7 was very painless, I had non of the SATA RAID controller driver issues that Vista had. Once installed the OS is lovely to look at, to be fair it has more than a passing resemblance to Vista with both OS's looking very similar, but for me the important part is in how the OS affects games performance and overall game compatability. Windows 7 has run every game I care to chuck at it and it runs them just as well as XP. Even the games engines that still gave me problems with Vista would run silky smooth on Windows 7, namely games such as: GTR2, Race07, iRacing. Infact the only game I've struggled to get working is IL2 1946 which needs some tweaking apparantly to make work on Windows 7. All other games I've tried have worked.

I also experienced non of the sound card device driver issues I had with Vista for my Soundblaster Xfi Fatal1ty card. This card was a nightmare to get working on Vista, but works fine on Windows 7.

There is not really much more that I can say as to be honest I really only use an OS as a platform for gaming, so I don't tend to make the most use out of the features an OS might have. All I can say is that if you are a gamer who avoided the move to Vista, quite rightly in my opinion, then it really is time to think about making the move to Windows 7, it is a fantastic OS. Microsoft couldn't afford to drop the ball a second time and I'm glad to say they havent.

5 out of 5 stars Best Windows Ever?   March 21, 2010

A friend had loaded an evaluation copy of Windows 7 on my Sony Vaio VGN-AR21S laptop which had become time expired. I had never loaded , or upgraded, a Windows installation before. I backed up everything important music, spreadsheets etc (including my 64 bit drivers) on to an external USB hard drive before starting and simply followed the instructions. I did a clean 64 Bit installation ( you cant directly upgrade from an evaluation version of Windows 7) which effectively wipes your hard drive. 30 minutes or so later I was up and running again. Reloading my programs took some time but I now have the benefit of a very stable setup. If you have Windows XP and are thinking of upgrading - and you have the right hardware - forget Vista and go to Windows 7. You wont regret it. This is money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Bye-bye VISTA!   July 17, 2009

I had Vista installed on my laptop since it came out and I can assure you that Vista is a great honking mess. It was taking ages to boot and trying to find my wireless connection at home was taking about 15 minutes. Outlook was taking at least 20 minutes to fire up. I had lost faith in Microsoft.

I installed the RC on my laptop several weeks ago and it is fantastic. It's nice and zippy (the main problem with Vista). I have had no problems with it.

So, if you are unlucky enough to have Vista then you absolutely need this. If you're on XP then you're probably grand where you are.

Microsoft, please release the demons who made Vista from their contracts immediately.

5 out of 5 stars Windows 7 Ultimate   May 3, 2010

This is as it says Windows 7 Ultimate,
It is much better than Vista, and is far better at recognising hardware and obtaining updates as necessary.
If you turn off some of the unesessary bells and whistles it actually runs quite fast, boot up time is much shorter than Vista
for example.

If you buy this version (ultimate) you also have access to a downloadable upgrade from Microsoft that allows you to run a Virtual version of
windows XP for stubborn software that still just wont work in Win 7. its really good because, once installed, you can place an icon link to your XP software on the Windows 7 Desktop and it will run direct from there, and it works very well.

Also this version includes an encryption program which makes usb memory sticks, external drives etc... password protected and very secure.

This version saved me a fortune in not having to replace software. I could not get AVID video editing package to work in either Vista or Windows 7, but it runs perfectly in the virtual XP mode, this alone saved me 600.00!!!!!

If you are thinking of upgrading and can afford the extra for the Ultimate version then get it, as it does have useful extras.

5 out of 5 stars Windows 7? OS heaven!   September 2, 2009

Windows 7 is an excellent OS, and possibly the first OS to ever actually outperform its predecessor! Vista never outperformed XP, XP never outperformed 98, at least initially. Windows 7 is fast, intuitive and what vista should have been! Basically windows 7 is vista but with all the annoyances removed and sped up some, the kernal hasent changed much from vista but the UI (user interface) has been revamped, so its the best of both worlds with windows 7.

PROS:
- Faster than vista, equal to or faster than XP i would say.
- Runs much better on less powerful computers (1GB of ram) that vista would choke on.
- Better overall UI, makes far more sense than vistas horrible UI ever did!! The libraries folder thing they did is fantastic and the overhaul to the notification area (icons in the bottom right) has been long overdue. Also the windows taskbar introduced in 95 is nearly 15 years old, and now finally you can drag items around on it! Its also been given an overhaul, it takes getting used to but the new superbar is great. Oh and you dont have to trapse through 4 or 5 windows and a bunch of menus just to change the frickin sleep button to shut down as was the case in vista...
- Everything that worked on vista will likely work on 7, i even installed a xonar U1 external soundcard on windows 7 x64 with vista x64 drivers and it worked, there were a few oddities with it but it did work. Im seeing a lot of windows 7 drivers floating about anyways so they wont be scarce like the early days of vista.
- Calculator/Paint/Wordpad have recieved a long overdue makeover, paint and wordpad now have the "ribbon" UI which was what office 2007 had, they can also do a few extra things for example paint has some new oil and crayon effects plus a bunch of new shapes :) Yeah its no photoshop but its a welcome addition.
- Internet checkers makes a return! Remember that fun little internet game that was in XP? Yeah they didnt feel the need to put it in vista and put inkball in instead :( well checkers is back in windows 7 you can play a quick game of checkers any time of the day or night against another human opponent just like in XP. Also players will time out if they dont make a move, so no more minimizing the game when you're losing and just leaving it there :)
- UAC has different settings now, i still disable it but the settings may be useful for the more security concious out there, its also easier to get to and can be found in the "getting started" bit that windows usually has.
- All my games so far have run flawlessly, thats Company of heros and starcraft but with many more to come, multiplayer works fine too.

CONS:
- Comes with windows media player 12 which i think isnt as good as 11 from a UI perspective, they shouldve just tweaked 11's UI and left it at that, thats just my personal take on it though, theres plenty of WMP alternatives so its no biggie.
- **Double edged sword here but everything that *didnt* work in vista likely wont work in 7, so that ancient printer or oddball USB attachment that vista didnt like probably wont be any good with 7 either.

UPDATE:
- **It has been brought to my attention that that oddball USB device and programs etc that didnt work in vista *can* work in windows 7 by using the "XP mode" feature. This feature basically allows you to run windows XP within a window, everything that worked in XP will work in 7 under XP mode. However it has a few restrictions, you must have a processor supporting virtualization and you must be running either windows 7 ultimate or professional. This is a very nice feature for buisnesses and people to keep compatability with XP and even bring back compatability lost with vista. If your CPU has no virtulization or you dont have ultimate or professtional theres always virtual PC 2007 which is downloadable and as long as you have a copy of XP or whatever OS you want to run you can use VPC 2007 to run it, it does not require virtulization or even windows 7.

In conclusion this OS is definately worth upgrading to if you are an unhappy vista user or an XP user whos got the urge to modernize then go for it, its got the speed of XP with the features of vista (and none of the annoyances). Im running windows 7 x64 typing this and its been great.
