5 out of 5 stars Get up to speed quickly   June 26, 2006

This is a great book for people like me who have no experience building websites. Don't get me wrong -- it's not a simplistic book, or an easy book to follow. However, I have made more progress in 24 hours with this book than I made in 6 months with a professional web design program which cost me hundreds. The best thing is that I now know that I am on the right path, whereas while I was using the WYSIWYG program I was being pushed in the direction of using tables to structure websites. I now realise this is bad practice. I am half way through this book, and my website is halfway to completion, and already I can see how clean and efficient coding in HTML and CSS is. I don't feel that my pages are bloated any more, and yet I can achieve quite sophisticated effects.
Highly recommended for beginners who are prepared to stick with it. Believe me, I wanted the easy route in web design and it took me much longer to get nowhere.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent starting point!   August 15, 2006

If you are interested in learning web design and can't decide which book you should buy first, this is definitely it! It will give you confidence and a solid foundation for further learning.

This is a wonderful book which I wholeheartedly recommend above all others as the first step on the way to learning web design. It is written very clearly in a step-by-step fashion which allows you to build on what you have just learned, and the resulting project web site is much more complete and impressive than I expected it to be.

The dialogue is very friendly and humorous at times and I felt that the author was really guiding me through the exercises. This made the book incredibly enjoyable to work through and I found that time passed by very quickly without studying feeling like a chore at all. The material from the supporting web site along with the suggested web links for further information were also fantastic.

I am very impressed by the author's obvious dedication to encouraging new web designers to follow web standards and to avoid learning bad habits. He is also keen to raise awareness of cross browser and accessibility issues.

I have learned much more than I expected from this book and am now much more confident with understanding and using code. It has also shown me that you don't need to invest loads of money on a WYSIWYG program to make a good web site; a simple text editor will do!

5 out of 5 stars You NEED this book   February 15, 2007

I have built around 30 fully functional websites using Dreamweaver and although they all worked, i found the process emotionally frustrating and time consuming.

I decided that there must be an easier way of using the code behind dreamweaver to make things run a little easier. This book explains it all.

It takes you from the very begining from opening notepad and saving a file as a webpage right through to linking pages and appling different fonts in just the first 3 chapters. It covers every detail in such detail but still manages to inject a little humour. The sample project is first class and the downloadable code section is easy to find and use.

I have never written a review before but this book is so good i feel it warrants 5 stars. You need to buy this book if you want to learn about websites.

5 out of 5 stars Start Here ...   July 11, 2007

If there is one book I would recommend to anyone with an interest in creating a website then this would be it. The book is an excellent introduction to not only XHTML and CSS but also the main features that make up a website. In a light-hearted, easy-to-read way, it covers topics such as use of graphics, form creation, website hosting options and even blogging. And if that's not enough, it ends by giving you pointers on what you could go on to learn. Most importantly for a beginners guide to web design, it gives an excellent grounding in creating websites using web standards ... no table based design here ...

5 out of 5 stars Been looking for this book for a long time!   December 9, 2006

I buy lots of books but am seldom moved to right a review - however this one is different! Been looking for a book that would take me through building a website the proper way for ages - and this is it. Only got it this morning - read the first couple of pages and already I know that I am in the right hands - it is written an amusing style too! Really looking forward to getting my web site up and running - and will save myself the £'000s that I have been quoted by other people!
